Default Please Help! Near suicide!!!!!

Have an 87 944 which will not start. Was in Wendy's drive-through when car suddenly cut-off without warning. Pushed car into IHOP parking lot and have been endlessly working on it since. Car will crank but engine will not turn over. Originally believed to be DME relay, but have created a jump out of speaker wire using the 87, 87b, and 30 slots. No response from the fuel pump. No change in start-up either. Possibly a timing belt? (Took car to mechanic at purchase to have belts changed and water pump replaced only to be told by the mechanic that the timing belt had been recently changed and did not need to be changed again -- that was about 5,000 miles ago) Maybe the fuel pump is bad? Car has been driven hard before, but was running well. Only major sign of trouble was high oil consumption rate. Would need about a cup (1/4 quart) of oil every 2,000 miles. I am to try the DME relay jump again, in the hopes that i may have done it improperly... I really don't have the money to replace a timing belt/fuel pump.... and I dont need to hear that the valves and pistons are damaged because of a bad belt...
Help, please!

Well, does the engine crank over faster than it did before? Or does it still labor a bit to turn over when you hit the key. You can look through the small hole on the distributor housing with a flashlight and see if the belt is in 1 piece. Then mark it with a paint pen, or red marker, and try to start it. then go back and check your mark. If it is still there, then your timing belt is broken or stripped. If the mark moved and is no longer in the hole, then you are ok.

If the starter is engaging, then the car is cranking over. It may not be firing, but it is cranking.
