Default Possible Electrical Short Help

I have a 1987 944 that is having some kind of electrical problem. At first i thought the problem was with the gauge wiring because the gages, including the tachometer, would would jump around when the car was on. But it started looking more like a short when i noticed that the headlights would go bright and dim and the turn signal flasher would start flashing sporadically slow then fast. Has anyone had this same problem or know of common problems that would cause this? Otherwise whats a reallllly good method of tracing down a short haha.

Thanks

-Tim

I would start by cleaning all of your grounds.
