Default Thinking about purchasing 84 944

Yesterday, my dad went to look at this car for the second time because I am thinking about buying it. First off, it's an 84 944. However, my dad said it was a 944S. I know they didn't make 944s back in 84. Am I right about this? Anyway, the car dealer wanted $3,700 for it. The car looks to be in okay condition, sun roof doesn't work, no radio, little minor electronic things, but it runs well. My dad said it handled and responded well on the test drive. I am wondering if this would be worth buying. But we don't know when the timing belt has been last changed and we are curious how much that will be every 20,000 miles or so it needs a new one. This car also has 86,000 miles on it when the odo is working. The car is black with the stock black rims by the way. Besides all those cons, my dad told me it runs well.

S was not made in until 87 as an optional package. 84 is a straight 8v 2.5L engine. My advice is to get someone to look at the car who knows these cars very well. They are cheap to buy, and very expensive to maintain.

If you are paying somone to do the timing belt, rollers, and waterpump, expect about 1200-1500. You can go 2 belt changes to every waterpump, so some belt changes will only run in the 600-700 range.

With so many things wrong with your candidate car that are actually easy to fix, it tells me that the owner didn't care about the car very well. With the odometer broken you have, in my mind, a ticking time bomb. You could easily be right around the corner to major repair bills that could easily exceed what you might pay for the car since you don't know how many miles it was driven like this. The other thing is that if the car had sat unused for an extended period of time, the seals could have taken a set and it won't be long before it starts leaking oil like a seive. Good luck.

Yes, you would be better off to find a 944 that had service records and known milage. It depends on where your at how many of them may be for sale in your area. The 3700 your looking at should buy you an NA thats is in known decent shape.

I just got a quote for a water pump, timing belt. The quotewas 2215.00 by one dealer and 2025.00 from another hear in the Twin Cities. I'd maybe work all the needed work in with the deal. 3700 plus 2000 is 5700. You can find a pretty nice 944 for that. One that would be in tip top shape. Keep that in mind.

Today, I deicided to buy the 84' Porsche 944. We traded our 94' Grand AM GT for it and I only had to pay $2500 for the Porsche. This car runs fairly well and I think it was maybe an alright deal. Anyway, I am so proud of this car and glad it was my first car I bought. I'll be checking up on these forums for advice and other help I might need considering this is kind of my project car.
