Timing and Cam

RE: Timing and Cam
Btw, in order to remove the head, I have to drain the coolant; which requires me to run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
This could be a problem seeing that I cannot start the car...
Suggestions?

Thanks tarheel
I guess I need to take the head out and see what has been damaged. For sure at least couple of the valves are bent which isblocking the piston from going up. What I should have done after puting the timing belt was, while the cover was off, to turn the engine manually and see if the belt stays in its place for couple of cycles.

No problem Zorin,
Although, reading your thread... it seems as though, even if you kept the cover off and turned the crank manually you wouldnt have been able to foresee the belt coming off.
If the car run a few minutes fine, then it would take a lil more sustained force than you could have done manually to notice the belt was going to come off.
That's really an unfortunate situation. Hope it goes well.

I feel much better now. No more feeling of guilt. Hope it goes well for you too.

Yeah, I think I am gonna have to take off the exhaust. I know that clarks-garage says that you can do without taking it off but, I don't think I am gonna try it that way.
I also need to drain the coolant... but without being able to run the engine... idk how im gonna do it properly.

RE: Timing and Cam
You can just drain it cold, then once you are done, fill it with just water, to make sure everything is OK, then warm up the engine, do a complete drain and fill it with 50/50 coolant. Don't forget to bleed the air out.

Thanks Zorin,
Thats what I going to do. Also, I'm curious as to the condition of your e39. I've always been a huge fan of the 540s from that model generation, never been able to drive one. A friend let me take an auto 530 out for a spin... but I couldn't even begin to fathom how fun driving a manual 540 is...

RE: Timing and Cam
Actually my E39 has Steptronics (Manual/Automatic) transmission. It also has the sports package which means the suspension and steering wheel are different. As well, it has higher rear axle gear ratio which increases the torque to 300 foot-lb.
