Default Boxster overheating

My '01 Boxster is overheating, and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these cars? I think the thermostat is shot, but I'm not sure. When I've been driving for a while with the heater on, it smells like something's burning. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

BTW, this is the first actual winter this car has seen. I just moved it up to Connecticut, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Is it overheating over 180 on the instrument gaugeon the right side? or is this overheating related to your heater/fan broken maybe? where is the burning smell coming from?
