97 to 04 is 986 body
05 to present is 987 body
The S models in 986 body have a bigger engine and 911 brakes cross drilled rotorsand a few other small things, front bumper cover is different too.

Instead of opening another post just wantd to let everyone know I fully enjoy my Boxster s it is a 2000 with about 40,000 on it now and it drives like it is on rails.
I have Change Oil and filter in it with O w 40 Mobil 1, replace air filter also belt and sparks plugs. I put the Beru in it and that was in it to start with so I use that brand. All and All it was a simple job to do. This is the first porsche ever own but I am sure it won't be the last.
I don't know how the brakes pads hold up but planning on doing them in a short. Also it is Black and I want to paint those bumbrettes gloss balck. I plan on keeping it for awhile since it is in good shape for the age. Great foum lots of infomation on it.
Hope everyone is enjoying the New Year and it shows progress in your future.

986 - Early model (may be 2003), rear window is plastic, 987 - rear grass window
986 - to operate the top (up and down) I believe the car has to be in complete stop, 987 - the car can be moving at 25 mph
986 - has spare tire, 987 - no spare tire, no jack
Boxster - one tail pipe, Boxster S - 2 tail pipe
Boxster - black color brake, Boxster S - Red color brake
Boxster - no center air intake at the front bumper, Boxster S - there is a center air intake at the center of the front bumper (I hope I describe it right, the openning in the center of the front bumper)

Regarding painting those bumperettes, I just finished doing it. If you do it yourself go to a site like paintscratch.com to get the proper primes (need two) for adhering paint to rubber. Also, gloss black can vary, so use the Porshe mix from a vendor like I mentioned.
Sanding those bumperettes smooth is a PITA. But don't use a really rough grit as you'll carve swirls in the rubber that won't sand out.
Looks great when completed.
