I had the same problem with my 97. My key went bad, I used my spare key and I had no problem starting the car

Yup, sounds like the transponder in the key needs to be reprogrammed.
Either that, or your roof drains are clogged and the immobilizer is bad. If your drivers floor board is wet after it rains, then most likely the immobilizer.
