Would it be expensive to put an automatic transmission into a vintage 911/912? Is this even possible? Porsche's are my favorite cars (specifically 911's) but I just don't feel comfortable driving anything with a manual transmission.

Possible yet, anything is possible. Expensive? Prohibitively.

 

I've done a lot of conversions - engines and trans and axles, etc. As PorscheDoc says, its possible -- anything is possible with enough money and time. But this really is a BAD IDEA. Assuming you got an automatic transmission into a vintage 911/912, the result would be a bad car: engine not designed to power an automatic -- too high reving, just not made for it. Buy a later model, one of the first with an auto (somewhere along the line they began offering them).

A much better idea if you insist on this conversion -- still very expensive, but now workable and capable of making a good car, is to switch out the entire engine/transmission/transaxle with a trio made with an auto trans. I'm not sure what would work: a modern Tiptronic Porsche drivetrain would be the obvious choice but is probably too wide and they are water cooled presenting you with serious costs and problems for cooling -- an older (but still a lot newer than the car) all air cooled auto trans Porsche drivetrain might work. I've seen reproduction 356s that look and sound perfect have been built with a Suburu box (horontally opposed) 4 cyclinder motor/transaxle and those are available with an auto. My intuition would tell me to start there.

 

porsche did make a sportomatic transmission which used to fit in cars up to 1976 ,these did have a gearstick to change gear but no clutch pedal ,might be an option

Finding a 911 with a sportomatic seems like the best option at this point, though they seem to be somewhat uncommon. Money's a big concern, as I am just a college student, and I don't know a thing about the mechanical insides of a Porsche.

 

Absolutely do not buy a porsche until you are out of school, have a good job, and a 2nd car. A cheap porsche will bury you financially. I have seen it happen to a lot of people with good paying jobs.
