Default A Real Brain Teaser

I have a 1988 Carrera. On about a 75 mile trip the other day, the car started smelling like rotten eggs. When I got it home it began running very rough and then stalled in the driveway. The next morning I tried to start it and the battery was completely dead. I tried to charge the battery, but it would not take a charge. I then jumped the car and it ran okay while the jumper wires were attached but the minute I removed them it began stumbling again and stalled. I then bought a new battery and put it in but the car would not start. It just turned over and over. Suspecting that the voltage regulator had stuck or something else had occurred that had “fried” the battery, I took it to my local mechanic to check it out. He found a relay switch that appeared to be burned up and put a new one in. With that, he was able to get the car started but it ran very, very rough and seemed to be pouring fuel into the engine. He then took out the computer, which he said is under the seat and looked at that. He said that it looked like it had been burnt and heat damaged as well. He is now afraid to put in a new computer for fear that that one will be fried as well (the cheapest replacement computer he could find is $1,000 rebuilt). Three questions:1. What is going on here?2. Should I put in the new computer and have him check the voltage right away? or 3. Should I just give up and take it to Porsche? Thanks for any advice that you may have.
