Petrol Smell

Petrol Smell
Hi guys,
I’ve recently acquired a 1983 911sc, which apart from a “strong smell of petrol” coming from the front of the car, is fantastic.
I looked under the boot carpets and followed the breather pipes out through the left front wing, where they disappeared into what looks like a small tank under the wing (just above the washed bottle).
1. Has anyone had a similar problem and what was the fix?
2. anyone know what that little tanks is for?
Your help will be much appreciated.

RE: Petrol Smell
I bet your fuel pump (or one of the lines) is leaking underneath the front trunk. I just had that problem this week with an 84. If raise the car up and look underneath, you will see a flat shield between the 2 front wheels near the rear of the gas tank. Remove the 2 17mm nuts, and the 2 8mm allen bolts, and drop the pan down. Underneath is the fuel pump.

RE: Petrol Smell
Sir,
Just coming back to you to thanks you for responding to my problem.
I think I've now got it - there's a small white plastic container in the boot, which has three pipes (breathers) going into it. When I put soapy water around the join in the middle and pressuring it, little bubbles appeared.
Now filled in the gap with Araldite and with any luck my problem should be sorted.
By the way, look underneath at the fuel pump area and there doesn’t appear to be any problem there.
Thanks for your help and I'll let you know if it’s a success.
Alan.
