Default 944S2 CAB fuel/petrol smell

Hey all,

I'm new here awesome forum I've been having a read and there's some great knowledge in here.

I'm from Australia and my 1990 944 CAB has developed what I think is the same problem as the following posts I found on the web.

http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/por...2231790-1.html

http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/por...2247984-1.html

http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/por...6804230-1.html

I've also availed myself of the garage shop manual (awesome resource) at http://www.clarks-garage.com/ but there doesn't seem to be the exact problem under the fuel section of the manual (although lots of other problems are covered). The only other minor thing which may have something (although I wouldnt have thought so) is the fuel guage isnt 100% accurate ie it doesnt go to the top even when the tank is full but has been this way since I bought the car (3x tanks of fuel ago)

being R/H drive the fuel sender unit in my 944 is behind the driver's seat and there is a black plastic tank that is behind the r/h side carpet above the boot next to the filler.

My problem is that I've located some fuel seepage on the left rear underside of the vehicle and right next to the exhaust / muffler (silencer) on the lower extremities of the sheetmetal of the rear L/H wheelarch. There is also no smell near the fuel sender unit but is very strong around the battery compartment inside the boot. I cant see under the battery cover but have stuffed clean cloth in there and it doesn't come out smelling of fuel and everything seems dry on the inside of the boot (trunk) so it has me stuffed.

All the carpet is up and I can't see any other access to the tank/overflow pipes. Can anyone assist? thanks for your help!
