Default 997 Turbo amazing car?

Well I am looking to buy a 997 Turbo. I started looking at the specs of it on Porsche USA and noticed the acceleration.

It says with 6-speed 0-60 3.7 ok very fast

Then I look at the Tiptronic, it said 3.4!! Thats faster then a Porsche Carrera GT and ENZO Ferrari!

http://www.porsche.com/usa/models/91...turesandspecs/

I don't understand why there is much talk on how fast the 997 Turbo is especially with Tiptronic!

I know that past 60mph the Carrera GT and ENZO will probably pull away, but still the porsche can beat it to sixty.

The 3.4secs is obviously with the sport chrono button on right?

I think I might get a Tiptronic, because I already have a Ferrari F355 6-speed and I am going to use this Porsche a lot, almost as an everyday driver, but I am not going to replace my everyday driver (07 Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC).

Thanks
John

OK here is the deal. A significant portion of the 0-60 time is spent actuating the clutch. While clutched you are not powering the wheels. In an automatic the computer can do it faster and better than a human so you get the faster 0-60.

Side note the new PTK transmission does it better but is not available in turbos until 2010. The new auto uses the same double clutch type idea as in the Audi trans.

The automatic is becoming superior to the manual in many ways. More sensors and processing power are shaping faster 0-60 and lap times. That being said the manual is still more fun.

If you have a 6-spd 355 then you may not haven't tried Ferrari's dual clutch auto-manual, basically what Porsche PDK copies, so you don't realize it would be great. A Carrera S with that wuld bea very sweet daily driver.

Hey guys,

I am looking at 2 997 Turbos and not sure which one to go for. The first one is an 07 GT Silver with 3900 miles and Tiptronic with Chrono. Second one is anArctic Silver with 2900 miles, 6 speed manual with Chrono however has the Ceramic Brakes. The car will be used on the NOT so busy Montana roads but I kinda favor the automatic as I own an SMG BMW M3 at the moment... Both cars are full Black leather with matching mats andSAME price tag.Your input will be more than welcomed

+1 here.
The current Tiptronic - in the car you're citing, is a classic slushbox. Has all the non-sporty feel of an automatic - though it does produce the 0-60 times due to fast shift speeds and can modulate the engagement RPM speed for more power. But it's an automatic. No way of getting around it. Yuck.
Now, as stated, the PDK is something else - just as the F1 box is on the F430. I've driven the F-car, so I believe I can convey accurately that this is a completely different experience. One I hope to own one day in trade for my 6-speed.
If I had my druthers:
1. Wait for the 2010 Turbo with PDK
2. Buy a 997.1 with Chrono and a 6-speed
3. Do nothing - but enjoy your F-car.
