Default I need help looking up a 1970's 911 Vin Number!

Hey guys i'm new to this forum...hopefully going to be part of the porsche owning family but i need some help before i buy this classic. I'm looking at an early 1970's Porsche with a vin number of 9112102860. I was wondering how i can look this up on a carfax because they only allow cars with 17 digits. I was told that these cars only had 10 digits and started with 911. Any way to look these up.

please let me know

thanks
Jason

The earlier VIN numbers don't hold a lot of info, nor do they fit current standards.
And so much could have occurred prior to the introduction of car fax type services that it's not anything that could help you anyway.
If you are serious about this type of vehicle then you really should do research on the earlier models to get a firm handle on the pros/cons and common problems associated with these vehicles. There are plenty of sources online and in print that will get you up to speed relatively quickly. Good luck.

Get a PPI done at a good quality independent porsche shop that knows 911's. The dealer probably won't help much, as their knowledge of anything older than 10 years is very minimal. That will tell you more than any carfax.

Pre purchase inspection. There are various levels you can get, and they will of course differ in price and what is in them. A basic PPI is going to look over the car, look for the obvious things the car will need, brakes, tires, suspension, etc. Also the cosmetics interior and exterior...has the car been painted, is it the original color etc, does it drive, shift, stop good. One step up might add a compression test. Another step up, a compression and leakdown test (which is the one i would highly recommend), which will give you a good idea of the condition of the engine. The PPI information belongs to the potential buyer of the car, the seller does not have access to that information. Our PPIs range anywhere from 200 bucks to 500 depending on what the potential buyer wants checked. I highly recommend getting the leakdown and compression test done, as a bare bones engine rebuild will run in the neighborhood of $7-8k. The leakdown and compression on a 70 911 is very easy to do, there isn't any of the smog stuff or intercoolers to remove like there is on a mid 80's 911 turbo.

Edit: It pays to have a professional who knows what he is looking for do the PPI. If you aren't very familiar with 911's, it is hard to just look one over and think you are getting it all....

k thanks for letting me know....my friend of the family owns a porsche restoration company thats been around for over 30 years so im gonna have him look at it. According to the VIN number its a 1972. According to websites and porsche books that i have there was never any 911's made in 1972. I noticed on the rear right fender there is a cap for where you insert the oil in the car. I talked to my friend and he said it was the only year they made this feature because people use to go up to the gas pumps and they'd have gas put in by accident. Anyway the car has a widebody conversion which looks more like a 86 930. Im gonna have it completly looked at but also accoding to this website...the noly porsches they made in 1972 was the RS. Im not sure if this is or is not, id have to see the engine again because let me know if im wrong but the 72 RS's had a 3.6l.

The 72 and 73 911 had the 2.4L engine in, so the RS was not the only 911 made in 72. But an RS conversion would be kick *** if it already has the wide fenders

k thanks....yea i found out that its a 911T according to its vin number..you can encode them for each number in the vin..first 3 is the model....911...2nd number is the year 2...(72)...3rd number is a 1 2 or 3...1 for T.....next number is a 1 or 0...1 for targa 0 for coupe..and then last 4 is just the unique numbers. Anyways its a 911T with a wide body conversion. ITs gotta the very very wide rear fenders with black flair on the sides and a nice looking turbo style dolphin fin. Also had some type of quad exhaust system. Anyway im gonna have it checked out and road test it tomorrow...looks very unique though...thanks for the help
