Default Newbie Question -- 996 and 911

My car is a Boxster S, so this may simply be showing my ignorance (I'm ignorant in lots of areas, but I often can only learn by asking "stupid" questions!).

I was walking through a parking lot tonight and spotted a Porsche I had not seen in the area before (small town!). On that back end it simply said "996". I've seen lots of different designations, but never JUST 996.

Were there particular years of the 911's that said 996, or is this possibly one of the few (nine hundred and eleven) "911 for the Millenium" edition that were made in 2000? (Can you tell I've already been searching on this?)

Any clue you would be willing to offer to the admittedly clueless here would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
