Yes your friend should be drawn and quartered in the street and dogs should consume his torn flesh.
Yes, it is a shame to chop up a mint 944, it is also a shame that people rice out cars. It would be doubly a shame if he chopped up a great car to rice it out.
There are much better looking cars out there to rice than a Porsche 944. Try putting the Lamborghini/90's Nissan 300ZX idea past him. I've seen a 300ZX with some body mods and tubbed for Lambo wheels that look uber-sexy, and you get a motor to boot that nobody will cry if it gets wasted fo a Skylne motor swap out, but is still good to go to the limit if you want it to.

You can make the 944 turbo engine very fast with the right upgrades, but it will be spendy. If he can drop 4k into mods, the car will be scarey fast. Look up some of the packages at www.vitesseracing.com, John is one of the best 944 tuners out there, and his kits make some mad horsepower, stage III for about 3.5k will have the motor well into the 400's, which will smoke almost anything out there within reason (though you would need to upgrade the clutch at the same time, so figure another 1k). Otherwise look at chips, exhaust, wastegate, bigger turbo, injectors, boost controller, etc. A very mildly tuned 944 turbo will run circles around an early 80's 911 turbo, though the 930's do look kick a$$. I would stay away from the 911, just because you are talking serious money to upgrade, and also, most early 911's that i see, need some sort of engine work to stop oil leaks, etc, which is very expensive to do. 5k will do very little to rebuilding a 911 motor.
