Default Damaged soft-top linkage

I'm a new BoxterS '01 owner as well as a new member to this Board. Has anyone had my bad experience of damaging the top linkage by failing to undo the windshield latch? My Porsche dealer found a bad interlock switch (I assume at the latch area) which apparently allowed the motor to operate and break the L and R ball joints! With the new switch and ball joints (repair cost of around $600) it's impossible to make the same mistake. However, it's preposterous to think that Porsche engineers would set up the closing system such that when the safety switch fails it allows power to flow past it to the motor!!! Porsche North America will hear about this.
