early 85 water pump
I'm hearing a "bearing" sound from behind the timing cover in the location of the water pump. I was going to replace the timing belt and balance shaft belt and all the rollers/tensioner anywaysince I don't know their age. The newer style water pump uses a guard rail and roller. Should I opt for the newer style? Is it an improvement? Any tips? Thanks
yes, i would recommend the newer style pump. You will have to cut out the back of the timing belt cover (rear one) to make it fit. You will also have to change to the larger idle roller for the timing belt, which would be done anyway during the belt change.
If you are hearing the bearing, then I would not start the car again, until after you have done the pump and bearings. A bearing seizes up, and your timing belt, and subsequently the valves, will be toast.
