Default wheel bearings..

hi. so my84 944recently started making a creaking sound from the rear of the vehicle whenever i slowed down. and not knowing to much aboutcars i took it into the shop. The mechanic said that my rear left wheel bearing is pretty much gone and said to immediately stop driving the car as it could be dangerious. he said the tire couldcome loose. That shopquoted $500to repair the onewheel.
is this something i could fix if i bought the parts?the mechanic said its $300 dollars in labor and $200 for the part. im kinda low of funds right now so i was wondering if repairing it myself would be an option.. any insight would be great. also, it it is impossible to do it, is $500 about the right amount for that kind of work?
any help is greatly appreciated. thanks guys..

$200 for parts? Try $18 for the inner bearing, and $38 for the outer bearing. Rear oring is $2.55

If that is all he is replacing, then it sounds like he is ripping you off. If he is replacing something else, then I would like to know what, as $200 is outrageous.

The labor is about right if he is charging $100 an hour.

get a big torque wrench, it is not to bad of a job, but you may need a stub axle also. If thats the case you can find good used ones, but they are all kind of pricey.

i called the mechanic and he said all that was being changed was the inner bearing, outer bearing and the oring. so i called european motors ( the shop who did all the work before i bought it, does a real good job) and they quoted $360. which is a big difference. so i thnk that is where i am going to take it.
before i do so though imma take and look at the problem myself to see if i can do it myself.if not. ill just bite the bullet and take it in.. just thought id give an update
