Default newbie question on "inherited" 944

I recently acquired a 1989 944. While driving today a red light with a white "!" appeared. What does it mean? The temp gauge, oil pressure etc., were all within normal ranges. Please tell me it is something simple and not a warning of major trouble. Many, many thanks.

That is the main warning indicator light. It can come on for several reasons, but I can't remember them all off the top of my head. Could be low oil, low brake fluid, parking brake on, airbag issues IIRC, etc. Typically if the oil is low though, the oil indicator light will also come on. Might want to just check those few things first, and then go from there.
