I am a new Porsche owner. I just inherited a 2005 911 Carrera with 11,000 miles on it. The rear tires, Continental Sport Contact 2s are almost completely worn smooth. The fronts are a little better. I read the The Continental warranty on their website which seems to indicate there is a 72 month pro rata warranty on the tires http://continentaltire.custhelp.com/...541670&p_olh=0 . 2 Porsches dealers have told me there is no warranrty for Porsches. I can't see that the warranty specifically excludes Porsches.

Is this tire wear normal for this car? My father was not a hard driver. Also does anyone have experience with tire warranties on Porsches? 4 new Michelins which the dealer recommends will cost me $1,600. I love the car and will spend the money if I have to but the tire wear was a shock. I guess I am naive. Before the Porsche I drove a Miata which never went through tires like that.

 

That sounds about right. On my 04 Carrera, I got about 12,000 miles per set before I felt it was time to replace (still had made 1/8 inch left, if the rear alignment was absolutely dialed in (the original tires -- from the factory, I bought the car new -- lasted only 3500 miles but that was due to poor rear alignment and the dealer actually replaced them free on the basis they had forgotten to check the alignment. It was a daily driver and I was never hard on it, but it was hard or tires.
I wouldn't expect anything from Conti under warranty either -- I expect if you read the fine print or talk to Conti they will tell you that the 72 months pro-rating applies only to defects and failures like tread separation or sidewall bubbling, not wear: think about it, no tire manufacturer would warranty wear for 72 months -- what if the owner drove 2,000 miles per month? Anything related to wear would be indexed to mileage, not time.
